Bobby SaynorHello my name is Bobby Saynor and I used to live in Burley Village and went to Kirkstall Road School. In 1951 I worked for the O K Carriers in Weaver St just below Joe Keelings. From there I joined the Royal Marines. The house we lived in was a one up one down and the toilets were a few yards up the hill running level with Village Street. Round the corner from our house was Burley Road opposite Haddon Road. I remember the CO-OP, Haddon Hall Picture House, Timothy Whites & Taylors chemist at the top of Burley Hill (now the One Stop). I went to stay with my grandmother for a while who lived in St Anns Avenue, second house from the top. A few of the names I can remember are Jack Foster, Donald Atkinson, Kenneth Hull, Jack & Dennis Walker who were in the Sea Cadets with me. Dennis joined the Guards and was killed in Korea. They lived near the Middle Rd. The teachers I remember at Kirkstall Rd school are Mr Bucktrout, Mr Martin, Miss Knapp and another pupil called Metcalfe. They also had a good Rugby team. I wonder if anybody out there remembers? I would be happy to get in touch. Bob Saynor See also: Burley People Pages that link to this page: Burley People / Memories Of Burley |
