Origins Of Burley Seven

The night was wet, 'bus 15 mins late out. Crammed full. I with many others had to stand three fourths of the journey. I may say that six seats were occupied by six of the most disgraceful and drunken men I have seen for some time. Two out of the six had the honour of entertaining us with a prize fight for so much a side. A third insulted three respectable females, for which he was courteously kicked out. A fourth, I wish to say little about him, simply that his countenance was a breach of the peace: this arose from past fights and past and present potations. The fifth threatened me that in some quiet corner I shall be repaid for my assistance in easing no. three out. The sixth smoked for some time counter to all wishes; until the conductor snatched the pipe out from the midst of the few teeth he had left, at their immediate risk.

from a letter from Dr Goldie to the 'Yorkshire Post', 29th December, 1866
