I am trying to locate a relative (distant) who lived in the Burley area at the turn of the centuary. The family I am looking for is Mark & Jane Ellen Fletcher who lived at 29 Bankfield terrace in the early part of the 1900s. Their son Harry was killed on the Somme in 1916 and I am trying to find his name on a memorial. All the men who did not return home after the war were honoured locally, a memorial must have been erected and placed in a central place in the village or in the church which St Matthias was the obvious choise. I know that many changes have taken place over the years but I wonder if anyone can tell me if the memorial has servived to the present day.
Best wishes to all

I WAS INTERESTED TO FIND YOU ON A WEB-SITE! I WAS PREPARING TO CONTACT YOUR VICAR TO ASK FOR INFORMATION. MY GRANDPARENTS, FATHER AND UNCLE WERE ALL DEVOUT MEMBERS OF YOUR CONGREGATION. i GREW UP IN lEEDS BUT HAVE LIVED NORTH OF THE BORDER FOR NEARLY 6O YEARS HAVING MARRIED A SCOTSMAN. i REMEMBER AS A CHILD SPENDING THE FAMILY CHRISTMAS AT MY GRANDPARENTS' HOUSE, 28 NORWPOOD PLACE AT THAT TIME, AND THE CHURCH CHOIR COMING IN THE EVENING TO SING FOR US. I HAVE A PHOTOGRAPH OF THE CHOIR - GRANDPA, JACK HALEY AND FATHER , FRANK HALEY ARE BOTH ON IT. IT'S POSSIBLE THAT MY UNCLE, ARTHUR HALEY MAY BE FEATURED TOO. I DIDN'T KNOW HIM AS HE DIED YOUNG AS A RESULT OF WOUNDS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR. I WONDERED IF YOU HAVE A WAR MEMORIAL WHICH BEARS HIS NAME AND POSSIBLY THE DATE OF HIS DEATH.
ALSO WHETHER YOU HAVE A CHURCHYARD WHICH MIGHT HAVE A FAMILY GRAVE, THO' i SEEM TO REMEMBER THAT WHEN MY GRANDPARENTS DIED IN 1937 AND 1938 lAWNSWOOD CEMETERY COMES INTO MY MIND. BY THAT TIME THEY WERE LIVING AT 31 LANGDALE AVENUE. NO DOUBT YOU HAVE THE PICTURE i FOUND IN MY FATHER'S POSSESSIONS (I DON'T KNOW WHEN IT WAS TAKEN BUT POSSIBLY AFTER THE WAR) BUT IF NOT AND WOULD LIKE A COPY I WILL SEND ONE TO YOU. ALTHOUGH CONFIRMED INTO MY CHURCH OF ST. WILFRID, HAREHILLS WHEN 15 YEARS OLD (I AM NOW AN OLD LADY OVER 80 !) I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND ALONG WITH MY HUSBAND SINCE MY MARRIAGE. ITH BEST WISHES. MARJORY SMITH nee HALEY.
