Unity Day
United Day is a day of celebration for the local community to show the best of whom we are. The community had lost a local Pub, the ('Newlands') through riots in 1995, which attracted intense national media coverage and this led to a negative portrayal of the area which we as a community had to come to terms with ourselves. Hyde Park Unity Day was initiated by the Hyde Park Residents Association with the mission to:
UNITY DAY is an opportunity for anyone or group to show their creative flair. Woodhouse Moor takes on it's own personality during the day with community stalls and local organisations. Sporting and skateboard competitions happen to challenge any and all. Local entertainers, Artists, bands, breakdancers, bingo callers all prove that unity day is there for everyone to get involved in. Co-ordinating the different areas is open to all volunteers, the existing unity team members and are here to welcome help and support any new members. The Unity OrganisationWhen you express gentleness and precision in your environment, then real brilliance and power can descend onto that situation. If you try to manufacture that presence out of your own ego, it will never happen. Unity is not a unit because someone asked why? Hyde Park Unity Day is a series of events climaxing with a 12 hour day of celibration for the community and visitors of Leeds 6. For six years we have benefited from the enthusiasm of over 260 team members. Each year a new team evolves through social contacts as well as Public meetings where any and all are welcome to join in and make a positive contribution of ideas and energy. There are no paid members of this team, so the professional manner in which Hyde Park Unity Day is organised is all the more impressive as it is done for fun! It's not just a question of taking people as you find them but where, how or what you leave them with. Unity is a diverse collection of people who have come together to do something, and magical things have happened. Hyde Park Unity Day is a 'not for profit', Voluntary Association.
